Hailing from the Armagh-Monaghan border, Dani Larkin is tipped as Ireland’s most exciting new alt-folk artist following an impressive debut at Folk Alliance International and her Great Escape debut this week. Her highly anticipated debut album Notes For A Maiden Warrior is set for release on 18th June 2021.
The album is centred around the concept of lessons on how to be a warrior, how to create change in this world by learning from stories of old and from other realms, and how to navigate life – love, death, suffering, pain, strength and kindness. It is not intended to be instructional; it is as a set of notes in song form.
Watch the accompanying video for The Red (Maca’s Return) below. Despite being primarily guitar and voice it’s deceivingly rich and vibrant, thanks to her innovative and emotive vocal delivery. She adds a raw intensity throughout her performance, deliberate and deep story-telling that reels you in, an unforgettable voice. 2021 is certainly going to be her breakthrough year.
Dani Larkin on The Red (Maca’s Return):
“The Red (Maca’s Return) dares to imagine what it would be like of Maca, the goddess of war and transformation, returned.
“The video seeks to offer people a snapshot of how the story unfolds for Larkin as she goes through the process of creating a myth from myth. It begins with imagining, setting the scene in a visceral sense, and moves through the cumulative frustration, anger, hurt and suffering that Larkin as story-teller experiences while sharing Maca’s story through song.
“The video and story end as quietly as they began demonstrating a sense of quiet chaos lurking just beneath the surface if we choose to listen.”
Dani has been creating music for several years, and is a well known face on the live circuit in Ireland. A storyteller by nature, her music is inspired by the folktales she was raised with, intertwined with elements of traditional melodies and rhythms from around the world in a timeless tradition.
