Martha Wainwright has announced her new album Love Will Be Reborn, her first release since 2016’s ‘Goodnight City’. The album is set for release on August 20th via Pheromone Records/Cooking Vinyl.
All eleven songs on ‘Love Will Be Reborn’ are written by Martha. She wrote the first song, and what would become the title track, released today as a single, a few years ago in what was a very dark time for her personally.
The gentle acoustic opening offers a plaintive start as she sings:
I cried only one tear for us today
And I will wipe it away before the day breaks
And there is love in every part of me I know
But the key has fallen deep into the snow
beneath the pain there is hope and optimism
So when the spring comes I will find it
And unlock my heart to unwind it
She pours everything into a stunningly heartfelt chorus line ‘And love will be reborn‘ before percussion allows the song to take flight
I take the throne and throw away the crown
And weave flowers in my hair from all around
And the injustices I’ve heard I will swallow
And reform the words to birds to undo the sorrow
“I wrote the song in its entirety within ten or fifteen minutes,” she admits.” I was bawling,”
It’s a strong lead single that bodes well for her new album, heartfelt, graceful and moving…Martha Wainwright is back.
Martha began to play the song live before she recorded the album and it became something of an anthem, giving her hope when it was most needed. The song, and the entire album, was produced by Pierre Marchand, best known for his work with Rufus Wainwright on ‘Poses’, the McGarrigle’s on ‘Heartbeats Accelerating’ and much of Sarah McLaughlin’s 90’s catalogue.
Recorded in Martha’s Montreal hometown, the album was made in the basement of café Ursa which also served as a studio and at PM Studios. Martha plays guitar and piano and enlisted the help of Toronto musicians Thom Gill (guitars, keys, back-ups) Phil Melanson (drums, percussion) and Josh Cole (bass). Pierre Marchand plays keyboards on ‘Love Will Be Reborn’ plus two other tracks while Morgan Moore plays bass on several songs.
