Back in March, we premiered the video for ‘What’s Shouted In The Dark (The Dark Shouts Back)’, the first single taken from Alex Rex‘s fourth album Paradise on which he is reunited with ex-Trembling Bells vocalist Lavinia Blackwall for the first time since the band’s demise.
His new single, ‘Black Peonies’, is a ‘not so pure Bubblegum country romp’ featuring acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter and one half of Kacy & Clayton, Kacy Lee Anderson. The instrumentation is firmly rooted in the cosmic country tradition of the Flying Burrito Brothers and American Beauty era Grateful Dead, but the lyrics are 100% Alex Rex. Opening with the line “I wear the knickers you gave me when I play football with the boys” the song is a vocal sparring contest that Alex is bound to lose.
The accompanying video was shot in Glasgow and directed by acclaimed musician, filmmaker and choreographer Daisy JT Smith, who has worked on videos by Sam Fender, Introvert by Little Simz and plays bass in South East London band Phobophobes.
The single is out now and available on streaming services.
Paradise is due to be released on July 30th via Neolithic Recordings. Pre-order it here https://alexrex.bandcamp.com/
