I imagine that a band such as the seven-piece Ringlefinch have been sorely missed around London during lockdown. They’ve delivered over one hundred ferociously entertaining live shows across the city and they must be chomping at the bit to get back out there again. A lot of influences are thrown into the Ringlefinch melting pot including trad folk, alternative rock, classical, and gypsy jazz which gives them their unique-yet-classic alt-folk sound which has seen them clock up over a quarter of a million plays on Soundcloud alone.
Since emerging in 2013, Ringlefinch have developed a style all their own. With two EPs (2014’s Mass Trespass – produced by Radio 2 Folk Award Winner Ben Walker – and 2019’s self-produced Gory Stories) and a film soundtrack (2015’s Making It) under their belts, their energetic 30-string sound has been described variously as “a lovely heart-warming clusterpluck” and “joyful, joyful rambunctious glory!”. A core part of the scene built around boutique label Folkroom Records, they’ve spent the last couple of years building their own studio and recording their debut album Tall Tales, which will be released this summer.
For those new to their sound, they promise dark-humoured, wittily introspective lyrics set to upbeat, quirky earworm tunes – the toe-tapping rhythms of swing and jazz manouche, but with a thoroughly folk sensibility – exciting, rabble-rousing live shows, peppered with moments of genuine tenderness and uplifting beauty – this is one musical casserole that’s far more than the sum of its ingredients.
For their ‘Tall Tales’ album teaser video we are given a brief taster of their playful and uplifting sound, let’s hope we see more of them soon. In the meantime, we have this nugget to look forward to.
