Our Song of the Day comes from Allysen Callery who is joined by friend & producer Myles Baer. Followers of Folk Radio will have come across Allysen’s music before now. Her last album Ghost Folk was reviewed by David Kidman who concluded:
Ghost Folk casts a mesmerising spell, impossible to resist, and yet also conjures subtleties and substance that demand your closer investigation (you need to give it more than its purely linear time to make its mark). Since, for all the shape-shifting nature of the music, there’s a discrete, and consistent, quality to the sound-world Allysen inhabits.
That ‘quality’ has cast its spell on our audience from the early days of Folk Radio and she has consistently offered further enticements to enter her ethereal world from her 2007 Hopey album to the Tove Jansson inspired title Hobgoblin’s Hat alongside the likes of Mumblin’ Sue, her 2014 Folk Radio UK Session which has been release on Bandcamp and more. Allysen has worked with Myles since the early days starting with Hopey.
How Did We Get Here was released as the pandemic hit in 2020, as part of a benefit compilation called Hidden Place (see here on Bandcamp). It’s in tribute to the artist Maggie Siegel and the song was inspired by her painting titled “How Did We Get Here?” shown in the video below.
Described often as a delicate and austere “ghost folk” artist, Allysen looks forward to creating a more lush and psychedelic soundscape , with help from Myles in the near future!
