Tomorrow sees the release of Can You Hear The Birds Calling?, the introspective new single from Australian singer-songwriter Tom West. The video, like the song, has a warmth underneath which there is a sense of solitude and isolation…the video lends weight to this, capturing him at home performing and again as he sings “life in the city…” people walking past are projected onto him…like he is invisible to the outside world.
Tom West on Can You Hear The Birds Calling?
This song, I guess, is a bit of a meditation. I think I was searching for some meaning or some peace during a really tough time. There seemed like there was nothing much else to do but sit quietly and feel the sun on my face on a cool day, and listen to those birds going about their business. It was the only thing left to do while everything else raged, uncontrolled in the background.
West’s voice is strikingly intimate which lends his songs a very real personal weight, while there’s a sense of melancholy, there’s also a peacefulness that is lifting and makes for a very engaging mindful moment.
