Yorkshire folk and roots promoter True North Music presents a live-streamed concert with an all-female line-up of acclaimed Americana, folk and bluegrass artists this Saturday 13th March (from 7.30 pm) in honour of International Women’s Day this week. Sierra Hull, Hannah Read, Caitlin Canty and Isa Burke will each perform a completely live solo set for the March Lockdown Livestream. The event will be freely available on YouTube and Facebook, with donations welcome.
Grammy-nominated Sierra Hull made her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10 alongside Alison Krauss and landed a deal with Rounder Records aged just 13. Originally a bluegrass mandolin prodigy, Sierra has also become a renowned singer-songwriter and guitarist in recent years, developing her own acoustic style that ranges across genres, and performing around the world with her own duo and trio. Hannah Read is a versatile Scottish fiddler, guitarist and songwriter whose 2018 solo album Way Out I’ll Wander drew comparisons with the likes of Sandy Denny and Joni Mitchell. Hannah was also part of the critically acclaimed British folk supergroup Songs of Separation, Album of the Year winners at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. She has toured and recorded with folk luminaries including Kris Drever and Jefferson Hamer.
Isa Burke is primarily known for being one-third of American folk-rock band Lula Wiles and is equally gifted as a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist (on guitar, fiddle and banjo). Her fine singing, instrumental chops and razor-sharp lyrics form a potent combination. Isa grew up immersed in a thriving traditional music community in Maine, and has collaborated with acclaimed artists including Session Americana and Rose Cousins. Caitlin Canty is a Vermont-born singer and songwriter who ranges across folk, blues, and acoustic country with her evocative voice and expressive acoustic guitar accompaniment. Her song Get Up was nominated for Song of the Year in Folk Alliance’s 2017 International Music Awards, and her latest solo album Motel Bouquet was produced by Grammy-winning Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and included a backing band of Nashville’s finest acoustic musicians.
True North Music is independent Yorkshire roots music promoter, Maria Wallace. In normal times, Maria books UK tours for bluegrass, Americana and folk artists from the USA and Canada. She also usually hosts a regular live music series in Yorkshire, with around 50 gigs taking place since 2015, including concerts by Molly Tuttle, Front Country, The Slocan Ramblers, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, The Honey Dewdrops, April Verch and Pharis & Jason Romero. In the absence of real-life live music, Maria has organised several live-streamed concerts recently and Saturday’s event is the final part of a three-part series that has been partly supported by funding from Arts Council England’s Project Grants. The live stream will be freely available on YouTube and Facebook for all to enjoy, with donations welcome to top up the artist fees.
