Towards the end of last year, we premiered the video for Dana Sipos’ Lily in the Window which left a lasting vibrant impression. Her new single ‘Light Around the Body‘ carries similar surrealism that reflects her heightened perceptiveness – she has an entrancing and ethereal like quality to her voice and the way she transforms her observations into lyrics is quite dreamlike…as I read somewhere once – she coaxes silkworms out of their cocoons and spins them into songs. There’s no denying she is one of the most incredible songwriting talents out there.
The lyrics to ‘Light Around the Body’ are a fine example of that coaxing…they have a deep poetic flow “while Orion, with his watchful eye, hangs upside down”, a reflection of a trip to the southern hemisphere when the world was in turmoil.
The song is taken from her forthcoming new album The Astral Plane which sees her again team up with experimental producer Sandro Perri. The accompanying video gives a glimpse of her nomadic circus-like lifestyle with footage of a train trip across Canada where Dana was performing as an Entertainer on Board and from Red Clay Farm in Upper Economy Nova Scotia which is also an art space and organic farm overlooking the Bay of Fundy which Dana clearly has strong ties to. The song is Dedicated to, in loving memory of Tom Young, his family and the Red Clay community.
“Light Around The Body”, the first single from the album, is “a cacophony of reflections after a three-month solo tour to Australia and New Zealand in the winter of 2019,” says Sipos. “It’s infused with the vibrancy and sensory overload of being in such a far-out place where some things were literally upside down. But it also touches on some painful elements – I was in Christchurch when the bombings occured in the mosque, which of course was greatly mourned by all of New Zealand and the world. The aftermath of the 2010 earthquake was still very palpable and evident there. So ‘Light Around The Body’ is primarily about infusing oneself with the strange and beautiful and sometimes painful and strives to make sense of the senseless.”
The Astral Plane arrives June 25th via JUNO Award nominated musician Miranda Mulholland‘s label, Roaring Girl Records.
