For his latest video Bad Man, we find Adam Beattie in the kitchen cooking up a storm, enticing the laid back Zac Gvi and the delightfully cheery Fiona Bevan. The track features on his tantalizing new album Somewhere Round The Bend (reviewed here) which is brimming with fresh ideas, executed with a noirish panache…there may have been snow on the ground outside but there’s a tropical breeze running through that kitchen…take a bite!
Adam:
“It felt fitting to put out this single and video at this stage of lockdown, we’ve all been trying our best to keep domestic life interesting and adventurous, we’ve maybe all tried baking a cake for the first time or even making cocktails and pretending to be on a night out. The B-roll is musicians playing from their doorsteps, the closest we can get at the moment. The platinum-selling singer-songwriter Fiona Bevan and the jazz musician Zac Gvi both happen to live nearby. They also play on the actual recording. I wanted to do something country-blues, but with a twist. Playing around with bars of 2 and 4 to add to the cheekiness. I like how slide guitar can sound a little rude sometimes, like part of a wolf whistle. And this was my first experience of utilising the saxophone, played by Zac Gvi here. If you think about the themes of cheeky and romantic, it’s got to be the sax really doesn’t it. The sax is a dangerous weapon and Zac is one of the few people I trust with it! I wanted to play with the idea of being bad, making someone late for work, miss phone calls, let things slip. Definitely influenced partly by Nick Lowe’s ‘Lately I’ve Let Things Slide’. But I’ve tried to make it quite obvious that it’s good positive reasons. I like that contrast of good and bad. In the video, the concept started to take on even more meanings. Being a bad cook, but it’s good that one tries. Making cocktails but then pouring them away, you’ve got to be cruel to be kind, that sort of thing. I go on an adventure and then pick up people along the way, leading them astray.”
