New concert footage filmed in 1996 of Martyn Bennett touring his first album has been shared. Nearly 21 minutes long, the set features tracks from his self-titled debut album (released the same year on the Eclectic label) including Erin, Cuillin part 1, Cuillin part 2 and 3 Sheeps to the Wind part 2. Although the sound levels don’t start off great, they do improve.
Martyn would have celebrated his 50th birthday last week (17 Feb) and this concert footage is as good a way as any to mark it…it’s a remarkable performance now – but to have seen this in 1996 must have been mindblowing.
Looking through the brilliant Martyn Bennett Trust website (http://www.martynbennett.com/), 1996 was quite a year for young Martyn…still in his mid-twenties he performed “Deoch an Dorus and Cuillin to a crowd of more than 50,000 at the first Edinburgh Hogmanay event organised by Unique Events and Martyn’s career as ‘Dread-locked Funkster’ is kicked off.”
