How anyone can possibly resist the sweet vocal harmonies of Mountain Man is beyond me. One of my musical highlights of 2018 was the trios long-awaited return with Magic Ship. Since then we’ve been getting an infrequent delivery of covers which included Greensleeves, Wilco’s You and I, Kacey Musgraves Slow Burn and John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads. Even though they release an amazing 27-track live album last year, we’ve been missing them…
Today they are treating us to Fiona Apple’s Hot Knife from 2012’s The Idler Wheel is Wiser…if you recall the original you can see the attraction, vocal gymnastics, sparse with dense percussion and harmonies that have Mountain Man written all over it.
Of today’s release, the band says: “If we followed Questlove’s advice and made gratitude lists before we went to bed every night, Fiona Apple would be at the top every time. She tells the truth like no one else does. Thank you Fiona Apple. We love you.”
In addition to Meath’s Grammy-nominated work with Sylvan Esso, Sauser-Monnig and Sarlé have recorded their own critically-acclaimed solo projects. Sauser-Monnig released Dawnbreaker (reviewed here), her debut album under the moniker Daughter of Swords, via Bella Union in 2019.
