Bill Callahan and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy continue their endearing and captivating series of cover singles which has seen them team up with the likes of Alasdair Roberts, David Pajo, Dead Rider, Bill McKay, Matt Kinsey, Matt Sweeney and AZITA.
For their latest offering, they cover Lou Reed’s Rooftop Garden where his ‘vision of domestic placidity and shared moments of remove amid the urban squalor meets George Xylouris’ Cretan lute arrangement (Xylouris White), transforming into a dervish dance for Bill Callahan and Bonnie Billy, tapping an ancient and universal source, freeing the spirit to travel up on the roof or down the garden path into revelation.’
And one I completely missed in December featuring Meg Baird and a cover of Little Feats ‘I’ve Been The One’ from their self-titled 1971 debut – ‘Meg Baird meets Judy Mayhan meets Lowell George via Meg Baird, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Bill Callahan! Together, they cover a cover of a once-and-future great song. George’s country-soul miniature, slowed down by Judy to explore the contours of the melody, is further unspooled by Meg in a straightforward acoustic folk arrangement with plenty of space for Bill and Bonnie’s deep-focused vocal dynamics.’
If you enjoyed that, then checkout one of our favourite sessions from 2016 featuring The Baird Sisters (Meg and Laura Baird) performing Down Where the Waters Flow at Brickbat Books in Philadelphia, PA which was filmed by Allen Crawford.
