The beautiful thing about sharing this song from Reykjavík based singer songwriter Jelena Ćirić is that while she is a new name to me, she will also most likely be to you too. The beautifully prose-like Lines is her debut single (out now), taken from her EP, ‘Shelters One’ out November 27, released via Icelandic label Paradís Sessions.
It’s rare to hear such a strong debut like this and for once, comparisons to the likes of Regina Spektor, Joni Mitchell and not forgetting the dreamlike qualities of fellow Icelandic-based singer Emiliana Torrini are entirely justified. The combination of her rich lyrics and expressive vocals overlaid on a gorgeous warm backdrop of piano, accordion and viola make for a staggering first presentation of an artist whose name I am certain we will all be a lot more familiar with before too long. This is truly one of the best singles I’ve heard all year and from an exceptional new talent…so naturally, it’s also our Song of the Day.
Lines seeks answers to big questions in the most unlikely places and the video, directed by cinematographer and painter Martyna Radkòw Flux Daniel, is the perfect accompaniment.
Jelena on the video for Lines:
“We wanted the video to feel like a short film, one with a narrative, and I think there’s a very relatable feeling in the video – we all imagine ‘what could have been’ if we had made different decisions at various points in our lives. But there’s a twist at the end that I think keeps the meaning very open to interpretation.
We had no intention to reflect ‘covid times,’ but I realize that they sort of creeped into the concept as well – going on walks alone and brushing past different realities that are closed to you, all separated by glass.”
Born in Serbia and raised in Canada, Jelena was nourished by the rich melodies of her homeland and bewitched by the song writing tradition of her adopted home. After studying music in Spain and a couple years in Mexico, she settled in Iceland, where she found a supportive musical community more focused on creating than labelling itself. Influenced by artists like Laura Marling and fellow Icelander Emiliana Torrini – Jelena Ciric’s songs light bright as a match and burn slow as a candle.
