The end of last month saw the release of I Can Still Hear You the new album from Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche, recorded from their New York City homes during the quarantine. In his review of the album, Mike Davies declared it was “Their finest hour yet” adding “it’s a musically gentle listening experience, suffused with both love and sadness and, as the title implies, a reminder that while we may be apart our voices are not silenced.”
One of the stand-out tracks on the album, of which there are plenty, was Ruins on which they were joined by The Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, on harmonies. Watch them performing Ruins in a live acoustic session below alongside David Roche on guitar and Rachelle Garniez on piano.
On Ruins:
Many of the songs on this record have a child-like quality. This is a short story about a boy and a lady intertwined by a fateful encounter. I guess you could say it’s a fable. The boy comes across a garden of flowers that he is intrigued by but for some unknown reason he destroys them, and he asks his parents why he would do such a thing, since he doesn’t want to ruin anything. Later, the old woman who planted the flowers laments the loss of her garden, but in her wisdom, she understands that whatever she creates may easily be destroyed. Still, the boy is left to wonder why he did what he did.
