Other Voices have been delivering some of the best concerts out there for over a decade now, set in the 200-year-old St. James Church in Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland.
They recently announced a five-day digital festival which will run from 2 – 6 December 2020. Other Voices: Bringing It All Back Home will be made available worldwide via Youtube, free of charge thanks to the support of Ireland’s Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, RTÉ, Kerry County Council, Tourism Ireland, Jones Engineering, IMRO and eir.
The concerts will also be broadcast live on Folk Radio UK’s Facebook Page.
Among those performing are a number of artists we have featured on Folk Radio UK including:
- Aoife Nessa Frances – She released Land Of No Junction earlier this year on Basin Rock Records on which Danny Neill concluded: This music is all about alerting your inner senses, the silent self that occupies a less defined dreamscape and it works spectacularly well if you are of a mind to go on that journey. The album finale is also the title track, six minutes plus of breathless conclusion. The opening lines kind of some it all up perfectly. “You were with me in my dreams last night, you stayed a while”.
- Brigid Mae Power – She released Head Above The Water in June via Fire Records. Thomas Blake: “Some of the great singers working in or close to the idiom of folk music have the ability to sound like they are talking directly and individually to the listener. Sandy Denny had it, as did Anne Briggs and Nic Jones. Irish singer Brigid Mae Power is a rare contemporary artist who can be talked about in the same breath as that select group. “
- Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh – She released Thar Toinn / Seaborne in March, what she called a ‘capsule project’, a mini-album of 6 tracks – each of them with reference to the sea or a sea-theme. Enchanting music and voice.
- Sun Collective – The project of Caimin Gilmore whose album Move\\Remove we reviewed only last week. Bob’s introduction said it all: “Discovering this EP is like discovering you actually breathe. You simply can’t live without it. Infecting your every pore it takes hold and won’t let go. You have been captured in its thrall.”
- Niamh Regan – we’ve been following Niamh for a number of years now, but her latest album Hemet has taken her musical status to another level. Billy Rough: “It’s impossible not to fall a little bit in love with Hemet. Beautifully listenable and rich in some rather gorgeous melodies and emotive arrangements, it is an adept and utterly mesmerizing debut. Niamh Regan’s deliciously languid voice is one to watch; warm and vulnerable in equal measures. Combined with her talent as a songwriter, Hemet presents the artist as a force to be reckoned with. A heartfelt, timeless, and captivating release.”
- Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi – Last year we were introduced to this magical pairing via There Is No Other. Matt McGinn: “The impeccable pairing of Turrisi and Giddens is something few would have foreseen, yet should not be overlooked. This is music at its most honest and primal, you can almost feel the walls of the studio shaking. Producer Joe Henry’s touch is invisible, which is why he’s one of the greats. Giddens must be a sponge, able to soak up music and song from all over the world but what is beyond me is how she still delivers in a way that is pure and true to her roots. Rhiannon Giddens is the absolute real deal and so is this album.”
