Some artists seem to thrive in the face of restrictions and prolific collaborator Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy has been busy. Only recently he shared a series of singles with fellow Drag City stablemate Bill Callahan (whose Gold Record we recently reviewed here) and joining them on each of those releases was a special guest including a number of Folk Radio UK favourites: Alasdair Roberts, Bill MacKay, Sean O’Hagan, Matt Kinsey, AZITA and his old pal Matt Sweeney.
Mention Matt Sweeny and long-time fans of Oldham immediately recall the highly acclaimed Superwolf album of 2005 on which he wrote the words and Sweeney wrote the music. At the beginning of the lockdown, we shared a new song from them which is to be followed by a new album – “which is almost fully rendered, awesome and now awaiting the new world order to be sorted.”
Before that, we have another offering…in their label words:
“This is no miscount – this is the bestial duo, the two-headed dawg, the Superwolves: Matt Sweeney and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, talking directly to our face. They know no fear, only curiosity. “Make Worry For Me” is manifesto, and we can only hope to learn from it. To grow from it. For limbs to extend, beneath its blue, electric sky. To become Super, like the Superwolves.
The gauntlet is thrown. You’re dancing with the wolf again. Brooding and grooving upon their prey. Succumb to their ritual. Move your ass. Sing their song. Fight. Or die.
