Thrill Jockey have announced a new collaboration between Portland guitarist Marisa Anderson and Los Angeles-via-Nashville guitarist William Tyler. The duo have signed to Thrill Jockey who earlier this year released Marisa’s collaboration with drummer Jim White (a member of Venom P Stinger, Dirty Three, and Xylouris White).
Both artists have featured previously on Folk Radio UK. Glenn Kimpton reviewed Marisa’s 2018 album Cloud Corner on which he described her as ‘one of America’s most interesting and talented guitar players and composers.’
He also reviewed Tyler’s 2019 album Goes West, ‘his most focused album yet’ and went on to interview Tyler here in which he talked about his influences and aspirations – “I do think it’s important to state that if there’s a lineage I’m a part of, then it’s more in line with the Takoma school…But I’m influenced by jazz, for sure and if there’s one contemporary guy that I’d like to follow in the footsteps of then it’s Bill Frisell, who is arguably the greatest jazz guitarist alive, although you could make a case that his music is not jazz, or what you would consider jazz… The short answer is that I would love my music to be called jazz; if it could apply to a palette of genre-less music that embodied an aesthetic, then yes, that’s what I aspire to.”
Needless to say, we’re really looking forward to this exciting collaboration and on Friday 20 November at 8pm EST, Big Ears Festival will present their debut collaborative performance, as well as solo performances and pieces with guitarist Yasmin Williams.
