On January 29th 2021, almost exactly a year to the day after the release of their last album, Modern Hinterland are releasing ‘Diving Bell’ on Label Fandango. The album will be preceded by the release of ‘California (August 16th 1998)’ the first single which we have the pleasure of premiering ahead of its release below (along with the b-side). The single is released on Wednesday 21st October when, on the same day, Modern Hinterland play a free live stream gig at 8.30 pm. The gig will be streamed live from Embassy Studios In Hampshire and can be accessed via www.modernhinterlandlive.online – be sure to place a note in your diaries!

“I wanted this song to be the musical equivalent of an old photo. I was in California when I was a kid and I have a photo with that date on. It’s always stuck in my head as I remember the optimism and the carefree feeling, which aligns with a general cultural optimism of the late 90’s. (Definitely fading now!) Simon (Shippey) co-wrote this song with me and I think he had a feel for where I was coming from as he lived in California for a while.

You can’t keep us quiet for long though, so we thought we’d get into the live streaming game. Fortunately, Graham Dominy, who we recorded Diving Bell with, was getting set up for just that. So the stars aligned and we are really happy to get a chance to play live again, even if the audience will have to be very loud for us to hear them.
