March is the performing moniker of Bucks-based British singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kitty O’Neal. Below, you can hear her latest single For The World, which is being released via a label collective that Kitty has helped set up called Snail Tape Records on 23rd October 2020. It follows her debut EP, Wear Me Down, released in June 2019. After we first heard the single it came as no surprise that she had opened for the likes of Rae Morris, Rozi Plain, Band of Skulls and Fiona Bevan, her vocals are exquisite and have a wide-ranging warm tone that encourage repeat listens.
When asked about the inspiration for the single Kitty explains “For The World is about becoming fixated upon the fantasy world of dreams, and how this creates in me a sense of dissatisfaction with the reality of day to day living”.
Musically For The World reflects the dreamy vibe of the lyrics with lush harmonies, blissed-out guitars and euphoric string arrangements. Musical touchstones for For The World include the chamber arrangements and sophisticated instrumentation of artists such as Feist and Julia Holter alongside a jazzy soulfulness reminiscent of Lianne La Havas. For The World was performed by Kitty and features Frazer Pearce on bass and composer Dan Keen on drums, Dan also co-produced the track with Kitty. The strings were arranged by Kitty and performed by Mei Fujisato, Katie Mazur, Helena Bartlett and Ariane Zandi. Kitty cut her teeth as a solo artist on the Southampton/south coast music scene, and she has performed across the south of England, including multiple slots at Glastonbury and Sofar sounds.
