Jenny Sturgeon has today shared a video for ‘Being’, a new track taken from her forthcoming album The Living Mountain, due for release on 16th October via Hudson Records.
The Living Mountain was inspired by trailblazing nature writer Nan Shepherd’s book of the same name and Jenny’s experience growing up near, and walking in, the Cairngorms. Within the song cycle Jenny explores her personal connection to this highland area as well as delving into Nan’s philosophy of simply ‘being’ in the mountains and interacting with the wild. Shepherd’s 1940s mountain memoir, which lay unpublished for some three decades, has been described by The Guardian as “the finest book ever written on nature and landscape in Britain”.
Featuring Su-a Lee on cello, Mairi Campbell on viola, the accompanying video by Jim Lockey reinforces Shepherd’s philosophy of ‘being’ as the eye becomes transfixed on the smoky visuals. This sense of being in the moment is elevated still further by a field recording which was made within the Cairngorms National Park, placed after the song, it gives the listener an amazing sense of presence as we go from song to remote wilderness with just the sounds of nature for company. It’s a true listening experience and also our Song of the Day.
