One Step is the bewitching new single by Ida Wenøe, out this Friday, 28th August 2020 via Integrity Records, the first track from the former Danish Music Award nominee’s forthcoming third album, due March 2021.
Ida’s first foray into self-production due to lock-down, One Step was then mixed In Portland, Oregon by Grammy nominated Tucker Martine (First Aid Kit, Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, Bill Frisell) and mastered by Dave McNair (Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Beck).
Drenched in Ida’s characteristic blend of indie folk noir and Americana, One Step is a paean to the innocence of childhood when you know less, when the world seems so much bigger and when your dreams feel truly magical. Inspired in part by Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, One Step explores the paradox where having less, knowing less and understanding less provides the gift of freedom and innocence.
After dates in the US and a successful February/March 2020 UK tour, Ida was one of many whose extensive touring schedule throughout mainland Europe was decimated by the effects of Covid-19. Locked down in Copenhagen, She didn’t initially find all the extra free time a positive creative experience:
“When the world shut down, my mind shut down. Free time to be creative? Not so much. I pushed and pushed but desperation almost took me over the edge. In the end I found this song after many attempts, like a hidden gem that would only show its face when I’d been so close to giving up.”
One Step is also our Song of the Day.
‘One Step’ is out worldwide on 28th August.
