In this week’s show, we dip into the archives with some folk music from the 1960’s and ’70s including Richard & Mimi Fariña‘s debut album ‘Celebrations for a Grey Day’ (1965) with that dulcimer and Appalachian-like sound given a contemporary folk twist. From the 70’s we have Heron, Dando Shaft, Lazy Farmer (featuring Wizz Jones), Bert Jansch with his 1974 album L.A. Turnaround (recorded after the demise of Pentangle), Bob Dylan‘s Desire from 1976, Finn MacCuill’s Sink Ye-Swim Ye from 1978, Furry lewis from Fourth and Beale which was recorded in 1969 but released in 1975 – it’s a great recording and well worth hunting out – and Kevin Ayer‘s Whatevershebringswesing from 1971.
Amongst the new releases: Ben Bedford with a track from Portraits (one of our Features Albums of the Month reviewed here), Bill Callahan with a track from his forthcoming Gold Record, Sylvie Simmons from her new album Blue on Blue (recently reviewed here), a beautiful John Prine cover from Brigid Mae Power’s new digital single, a track from Will Johnson‘s new album El Capitan, a beautiful instrumental track from Parisian artist Julien Ledru from his new album White Oak Blues, music from Sidi Touré‘s fantastic new album Afrik Toun Mé – out 11 September on Thrill Jockey Records and Martin Kirkegaard and his sublime album Tar Gui which we’ll have more on soon.
