The end of this month sees the release of Indistinct Conversations, the latest offering from Land of Talk – the Montreal-based band led by Elizabeth Powell. Released via Saddle Creek on 31 July, the eleven tracks suggest this is perhaps her most emotionally vulnerable and honest release to date.
Like her previous singles for this album, the accompanying videos by Lara Kramer and Stefan Petersen are akin to self-portraits, an intense moment captured – Powell alone with her thoughts. Kramer’s work is known for its powerful imagery: “Often blunt and raw, playing with the strengths and vulnerability of the body, her pieces stand out for their engagement, sensitivity, close and instinctive listening to the body, and her attention to the invisible.”
You don’t understand, do you?
Lately, take a look around
I’m not here for them.
I’m not gonna lie.
Have I lost the feeling?
What’s wrong with me?
Powell produced and arranged the tracks together with her bandmates Mark “Bucky” Wheaton (drums/keys) and Christopher McCarron (bass), and the trio recorded the album in a studio built by McCarron in Wheaton’s apartment basement.
