Our Song of the Day comes from artist and composer Hanna Tuulikki who was honoured to be one of the music choices selected by Helen Macdonald (author of ‘H is for Hawk’) for her Private Passions on BBC Radio 3 last week.
Songthrush, a song written in 2008, originally featured on an album by Hanna’s past band Nalle. For Private Passions, Helen Macdonald chose a live recording of the song made in a tunnel by Glasgow’s Kelvin River in 2012 (watch below).
In the intro to the song, she said “I heard Hanna perform this at a conference many years ago and the timbre of her voice and the way she inhabits this role – everything about this performance – I just sat there and felt tears role down my face. It’s so strong and phenomenal.”
In 2014 Hanna undertook one her most ambitious undertaking to date in which she explored the mimesis of birds in Gaelic song called Air falbh leis na h-eòin (Away with the Birds). You can read our interview with her here.
In more recent news, Hanna is delighted to announce her participation in the British Art Show 9. Organised by Hayward Gallery Touring, and curated by Irene Aristizábal and Hammad Nasar, the exhibition will open in Wolverhampton on 6 March 2021 and tour to Aberdeen, Plymouth and Manchester.
The British Art Show is the biggest touring exhibition of contemporary art in the UK, unrivalled in its ambition, scope and national reach.
The exhibition has been developed at a precarious moment in the UK’s history that has brought politics, narratives of identity and questions of agency to the centre of public consciousness. The featured artists respond in critical ways to this complex context, imagining more hopeful futures and exploring new modes of resistance. For a list of featured artists and key dates visit here
