Misfit Paradise is the title of the new EP from Evelyn Cools, a perceptive offering from this well-travelled artist whose dreamy, lilting vocals and illustrations of her surroundings leave a long-lasting impression. As well as spending time in London discovering her artistic voice and realising her first EP, Misfit Paradise was written while living in New York and blossomed upon moving to Silver Lake, CA.
In Silver Lake, her own audio skills, consolidated by year-long course in recording and production at the Institute of Audio Research, and DIY approach to music came to the fore. Aided by producer Enrique Lara, it’s a real homegrown effort which, on a practical level, involved covering walls and doors of living rooms and bedrooms to record with better acoustics. Home rests at the core of this creative outpouring about finding a community free of judgment, that is welcoming to all ages, all races, all bodies. For the misfits, searching for a paradise to call their own.
“I’m not sure whether it was my early childhood or the west coast culture that suits my personality so well,” she says. “All I know is that the moment I arrived in Los Angeles, it felt like coming home. While it was not my intention initially, the Misfit Paradise EP has become an ode to this time in my life.”
Listen to the title track below on which she shared the following:
“As humans, we are always searching for other people who take us entirely for who we are. We look for people who challenge us, inspire us, elevate us, and make us feel like we are part of something beautiful – a tribe of people so different, but also exactly the same. I wrote “Misfit Paradise” after I moved to New York for the first time. It’s what I always wanted, to be in a city made for people of all walks of life. At the same time, my passion for music led me to a community that felt entirely free of judgment and valued human connection above all else. All ages, all races, all bodies, all different, all together. This song is written for the misfits, searching for a paradise to call our own.“
