The next Hudson Records Listening Club is on Sunday 2nd August – 10.30 am and features Rob Harbron and his album Meanders and will form part of the Sidmouth Folk Festival Online.
This week Hudson Records are delighted to be teaming up with the Sidmouth Folk Festival Online to present a listening club with Rob Harbron, listening to his 2019 release ‘Meanders’.
Watch Rob performing January Blackbird & Midnight Schottisch, two self-compositions from his album Meanders. Recorded for a BBC Radio 3 In Tune Home Session, April 2020. As Glenn Kimpton said in his album review here, described ‘January Blackbird’ as one of the album’s prettiest. “Composed on a winter’s day, ‘Blackbird’ is a slow-paced and spacious number that takes its time to deliver a quiet and considered glimpse of the simple life and the joy of birdsong. It is a tune that doesn’t feel the need to build to a climax or switch and change. Possibly the simplest piece on Meanders in terms of melody and one that came to be finished very quickly, ‘Blackbird’ is a perfect tune to end the album and its deliberate pacing and pin-sharp playing neatly encapsulate the feel of the record as a whole.”
The listening club will be available on Hudson Records YouTube channel and via the Sidmouth Online festival website. If you are a tune player you should definitely tune in to this weeks club.
Described by The Guardian as a ‘concertina wizard’, English virtuoso Rob Harbron is known for his concertina work with Leveret, The Full English, Jon Boden, Fay Hield and many others. ‘Meanders’ is Rob’s long-awaited first solo album, recorded by Andy Bell over two January days, it’s an entirely solo showcase of Rob’s distinctive playing of a 1930s Wheatstone Aeola concertina. Featuring an assortment of new compositions alongside settings of several traditional tunes – hornpipes from his native Cumberland and a rediscovered song tune collected in his adopted home of Gloucestershire – it’s a compelling glimpse into the world of a truly individual musician at the height of his powers.
Join Rob and producer Andy Bell as they listen to and discuss this fantastic tunes album, Rob will be online to chat about the album throughout the listening club so say hello in the comments area.
