Bristol-based musician Andy Skellam’s music is described as an idiosyncratic blend of surreal folk & dissonant blues using acoustic/electric guitar, banjo and his baritone singing voice. His music reflects darkly humorous & deeply affecting absurdities.

If you take a listen to his last album Green Moat, which was released back in 2015, you’ll discover a homespun sound that melodically sits quite happily alongside the music of fellow Bristol-based troubadour Rachael Dadd whose music shares a similar DIY ethic, something we much admire and are drawn to here on Folk Radio.
The good news is that he is back with a new single – Rosie is a Goldmine which is to be released via the brilliant Pear O’Legs Records and you can watch the accompanying video below. In true DIY style, the single is being released with a thick card hand screen printed poster to celebrate its release and can be ordered via Bandcamp here: https://andyskellam.bandcamp.com/merch/andy-skellam-rosie-is-a-goldmine-screen-printed-poster
Andy Skellam on Rosie is a goldmine:
Writing Rosie is a goldmine was a departure from self. I was immersed in a fictional story of two young lovers. It was also an attempt to write something uplifting, as my songwriting often tends to lean towards the melancholy. It started off as a very different song in which I initially made the guitar mimic church bells, which was interesting but the tune wasn’t quite there yet. I found that the instrumentation worked most effectively when kept sparse, with the cello bringing you into the crescendo of the song, mimicking the emotional journey of the young lovers.
Sally Imbert’s animation offers the perfect accompaniment to Andy’s new single which is also our Song of the Day and is more than a cause for celebration, so go and treat yourself and buy it along with his screen printed poster here.
