Alt-folk six-piece The Frisbys are set to return with their poignant new EP My Wicked Mind on 26th June 2020, a collection of songs that explore both the inner turmoil and resolute strength of the human mind and it’s the former that’s projected in their forthcoming new single.
‘Lead Me To The Water’ showcases both their bright and uplifting sound as well as highlighting the core talents of twins Helen and Nicola Frisby. Helen’s flute delivers a gorgeous mid-point highlight while that sibling chemistry shines throughout with some powerful harmonies.
Of the song, they tell us:
‘Lead me to the Water’ is about becoming so overwhelmingly enamoured with someone that you almost become a powerless observer in your own life. It’s about letting yourself be led into a relationship you both know is bad for you – a bit like being taken out to sea by someone who knows you can’t swim. The bare bones of the song was written many years ago right after Helen and I left University. We had the general structure and ideas for the verses and chorus but then lost inspiration. Nothing was really working so we abandoned it and subsequently forgot all about it. A few years later, after listening through a bunch of old demos, we felt it had promise so resurrected it; starting work on the outro section. We were aiming for an almost ‘gospel’ feel. It actually developed pretty naturally from that point and we finished it quite quickly in the end…. it just took about 6 years to get there!
It may have taken six years but it was worth the wait.
Helen and Nicola have been making music together since they were old enough to speak. Having performed as a duo for many years, the pair joined forces with university friends Sam Keer (electric guitar) and Marc Robinsonto form an acoustic quartet and released their debut EP Philosolove in 2013. After looking to develop a fuller sound, they recruited old college friends Tom Finigan (drums), Will Cattermole (bass) and university buddy Sal Palekar (violin, piano) in 2015, completing the line up. Sadly, Marc left the band in 2017 to pursue other interests but does still feature on My Wicked Mind.
