Our latest mix is from our Lost in Transmission Series and features a number of new releases as well some gems from a little further back in time.
Aisha Burns opens proceedings with ‘Sold’ a powerful opener from her 2013 album Life in Midwater. If you loved her 2018 album Argonauta then I encourage you to add this to your collection.
The Whole Town is taken from Amy Duncan‘s new album Hidden World from which she drew influence from dreams, greek mythology and her abstract photography. Amy plays guitar, synths, piano and electric upright bass on the album which features Guy Nicolson (Moishes Bagel) on percussion and tablas.
Want it Sometime is from the forthcoming new release from Callum Easter‘s Green Door Sessions (21 August MoshiMoshi). Those new to Easter’s music may be surprised by his choice of instrument – the accordion – Although it was the discovery of an accordion in 2018 that led to the biggest shift in Easter’s musical life to date and one that saw him embark more keenly on performing solo. “It’s not an instrument I considered playing until I picked one up in a charity shop,” he says.“I did my first ever gig on it soon after and it was pretty rough. I couldn’t say I got away with it.” Well he does here and it’s quite unlike anything you’ve probably heard before.
We recently premiered Swallow, the second single out from Sun Collective’s forthcoming EP, ‘MOVE ||REMOVE’. Swallow explores the remnants of past and inherited personal traumas. Playing on the double meanings of ‘Swallow’, the homonym see’s songwriter, Caimin Gilmore, exploring a myriad of complex personal traumas and emotional issues, in an attempt at self-healing.
Oh Dear is from Steven Adams & The French Drops‘ forthcoming album Keep It Light, out 21st August 2020 (Fika). Steven Adams is a “national musical treasure” (The Guardian) who fronted country pranksters The Broken Family Band throughout the 2000s before calling time on that band at the height of their success. He’s been ploughing his own furrow since, as he proves here.
Wishing Well comes from Purling Hiss frontman Mike Polizze’s (and Birds of Maya shredder). His debut solo album sees him stepping out from behind the wall of noise and it’s a total Revelation.
Sweet Lucy is a great Michael Hurley cover by Cass McCombs & Steve Gunn taken from their new single, the b-side of which features Wild Mountain Thyme. Available on Bandcamp.
From Neil Young‘s recently released Homegrown is Kansas which was recorded back in 1975.
From their 2018 Magic Ship album we have Mountain Man with some soothing sounds…Slow Wake Up Sunday Morning…that says it all.
Featuring Zohar Fresco, Murat Co,skun, Andrea Piccioni and Glen Velez who together make Masters of Frame Drums we have Dani Lo from their new album Elements.
Gnawa Beat is taken from Nayda! (out now on Real World), the new album from Moroccan-French four-piece Bab L’ Bluz who reclaim the blues for North Africa. Fronted by an African-Moroccan woman in a traditionally male role, Bab L’ Bluz are devoted to a revolution in attitude which dovetails with Morocco’s ‘nayda’ youth movement – a new wave of artists and musicians taking their cues from local heritage, singing words of freedom in the Moroccan-Arabic dialect of darija.
That’s followed by Majoun, taken from Electric Esoterica, the third album from Sunn Trio – a punk trio that is influenced by Middle Eastern psych, free jazz, and improvisation. It is the third in a series of records that revolve around Alan and Richard Bishop, Charles Gocher, W. David Oliphant, and Joel Robinson called the Mount Meru Anthology. These sounds are rooted in a history of creation in Arizona that involves people that were inspired and supported by people who do things differently.
Keeping things creatively refreshing, we have The Silver Field, Day Flowers is from her new album Sing High! Sing Low! which we reviewed here. An evocative mixture of psychedelic folk and hauntology – a fertile sound-world of tape loops, spine-tingling vocals and an almost visceral connection to the natural world.
From Gathering, another album we recently reviewed is Mary. Maybel is a new name in Canadian indie-folk circles, and on the strength of this truly charming first release of sweet originals, definitely one to keep a very close eye on.
Closing things out we head outdoors with Toby Hay for a track from his new album Morning/Evening Raga (available on Bandcamp). Make sure you watch him performing a track from this album which we recently premiered here.
