This week’s show is another for the ongoing Lost in Transmission Series and clocks in at a lengthy 105 minutes, 20 minutes of which is a live set by 75 Dollar Bill recorded at Cafe Oto back in December.
These mixes often take on what feels like a mind of their own, so despite a strident start, courtesy of Pop Staples, R.L. Burnside and Valerie June, things soon come off the boil and are turned down to a steady simmer starting with Jeb Loy Nichols and his EP title-track Season of Decline which we premiered the video for yesterday.
Among those recently featured and premiered on Folk Radio are Emma Tricca, who makes a double appearance with her latest single which includes a Bert Jansch cover, Niamh Regan with her new single Save the Day, Andy Skellam who makes a welcome return, JP Honey with Father, another track from his latest album, Jake Blount with another great track from Spider Tales (an album we just get enough of) and Camille Delean with a track from her new album, Cold House Burning which we recently reviewed here.
Among the other new releases is a great cover of Guy Clark’s Dublin Blues by Great Lake Swimmers which is taken from When We Last Shook Hands: Cover Songs Volume 1, the second release from their Bandcamp exclusive Lockdown Series.
There are some beautiful extended moments throughout this mix including a guitar/percussion discourse between Marisa Anderson and Jim White from their forthcoming new album The Quickening and what feels like a late-night exploration with William Tyler courtesy of Missionary Ridge.
That latter track was released on Tompkins Square label which ranks among my list of ‘seriously favourite record labels’ and there’s a healthy sprinkling of releases from the label throughout this mix including Sam Burton, Will Beeley, Tom Armstrong, Josh Kimbrough as well as Toby Hay who features on their new Imaginational Anthem Vol. X : Overseas Edition which comes with an extensive pdf booklet including artists pics, liner notes by Marcus Obst (Dying For Bad Music). Tompkins Square also just released Out of the Ashes : A Benefit Album for Minneapolis and the track Charlie Parr – A Meditation for George Floyd is just sublime.
As always, I hope you enjoy listening to it.
