Space-folk pioneer? Ring any bells? When we reviewed his 2017 I Dreamt I Was An Astronaut (Folkwit Records), he followed with a brilliant video for a track called Astronaut. Our reviewer described his sound as a cross between a manic depressive literature professor and a hung-over Stuart Staples from Tindersticks. That wasn’t an insult by the way…he also described his sound as ear candy that veers somewhere between neo-psychedelia and vintage Nick Drake melodrama.
Fast forward 2019, and the same reviewer, Phil Vanderyken, after reviewing his 2019 album ‘Pink Mirror’, described Jeremy Tuplin as an idiosyncratic, fiercely independent singer-songwriter with a knack for melodic hooks, wryly observant lyrics and a unique sonic vision.
Tuplin is back with ‘Violet Waves’, an album comprised of 12 new transmissions exploring love, the ensuing apocalypse of our habitat and all that exists beyond. Check out his new single for Space Magic below, proof that while his unique sonic vision is still intact he has introduced us to his broader vision, no doubt widened by the dreams he jots down…
Though the presenter might be consistent throughout, sharp-suited and booted, we are told that each song on the album is its own TV show channelling heartbreak, the first flushes of love, demagogic political leaders and much more.
For his first new broadcast beamed to the masses, listeners are invited to float in its LSD-infused soundscape, the fleeting stroke of the chimes imitating the fall of stardust from above.
Tuplin tells us “The song is about finding the fascinating in the everyday,” Tuplin explains. “I guess I use the term ‘magic’ loosely in a scientific way, and mostly focus on the very grandiose ‘Space Magic’, but through nature and anything from planet formation to the human mind, your neighbour’s overhanging wild rose or that piece of toast you’re eating for breakfast, it’s all pretty magical”.
His new album, Violet Waves, entwines his band, the Ultimate Power Assembly, in his cosmic spiral. Exclusively recorded with the band who joined Tuplin on sojourns through Germany, Italy and two UK headline tours last year, their unfailing presence results in a more brash, bombastic output, espousing the electrifying drama of Scott Walker.
