Our Song of the Day comes from iyatraQuartet with Bhairav (Break the Dawn). The song is taken from their new album ‘Break the Dawn’ which is also one of our Featured Albums of the Month. In his review of the album, which you can read here, Thomas Blake described the title track as “Perhaps the most atmospheric – and also the most ambitious” –
“…which features Barron scordatura violin while singing bowls provide a drone that could be sinister or transformative depending on your state of mind. Roberts’ insistent drumming dips in and out, helping to create a soundscape that is never still. Just when you think you have a handle on the sound, something new will emerge, or there will be a surprising change of tempo, and you will be floored all over again.”
Bhairav (Break the Dawn) is about transformation, beginning at first light of day and ending in … The melody is formed of Raga Bhairav, a North Indian classical raga traditionally played at dawn with a spiritual exploration of creating, sustaining and then dissolving the three stages of life.
