In 2016, London-based trio TEYR presented us with their debut album Far From The Tree. From Ireland, Wales and Cornwall, Dominic Henderson (uilleann pipes and whistles), Tommie Black-Roff (accordion), James Gavin (guitar and fiddle) are planning their follow-up Estren for 2021.
Teyr make folk music rooted firmly in the future; that future may indeed be Far From The Tree, but then, nothing grows where nothing’s been. Neil McFadyen, Folk Radio
TEYR emerge from the depths once again.
in their own words…
For those who are just hearing about us now, we are a folk trio that formed in London at the start of 2013. Over the years we have toured around Europe and the UK expanding our repertoire, our style, and our ambition to produce our own music full time.
In the autumn of 2016, we released our debut album, Far From The Tree, which featured in Folk Radio under a glowing review! Over the next year, we would see the development of an amazing community that supported us and got us playing at house concerts, festivals and small venues to our heart’s content.
One year later, in the autumn of 2017, we decided to take a break to work on our other projects. Between us, we have seen debut albums of our own (James Patrick Gavin’s “Chewing the Fat”), the start of new business ventures, and the beginning of a masters course in Nordic folk music in and around the Nordic countries.
Using this time apart, we started to realise that another album would soon be on the horizon, and not long into our hiatus were we taking trips out to Finland to visit Helsinki and to begin writing again.
It has been a rewarding process, writing music over long distances, and after two years we are absolutely thrilled to announce that we are releasing our second album, “Estren”, in the spring of 2021!
The trio are now looking for your support via Kickstarter to help launch the album into the world…there are some great rewards and incentives (CDs, workshops, lifetime guestlists and even homemade jam, mead and Patxaran). Head here to be a part of it.
This album is the beacon which all three of us have been heading, and where we collectively mix and grow our experiences as musicians into a style of music we want to introduce to the world – “Stranger Folk”, a natural evolution from our first album – music that is written for everyone that speaks to everyone.
Given the circumstances we are now facing as musicians, we couldn’t think of a better time to crack on with this album and bring together our ideas under the guidance of Ian Stephenson (Kan, Baltic Crossing, 422) as producer, featuring original compositions and songs, and tales of old brought to you in new arrangements and styles.
