Raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, Sam Burchfield was brought up on a diet of Appalachian music: folk, gospel, country and southern soul. We featured Sam back in 2014 for his track ‘Here Tonight’ and it’s a pleasure to feature him again for the newly recorded, When We Get Through. Throughout, there are the warm tones of that homegrown music from his roots, a gathering of hope for the times ahead.
Despite a large selection of players from lap steel and banjo to percussionists and backing vocalists, the song never loses its way – all involved just add to its charm. That’s quite an achievement when you begin to appreciate how this track was put together and why. It’s a winner on many fronts.
Sam Burchfield: “This song was written during the early days of quarantine when I was hoping for what would be on the other side. It started out as just a live performance by myself and my wife (solo single released May 1st), but I wanted to find a way to include my bandmates and friends while we were all without jobs and without places to perform together. I ended up just sending it to all the friends I play with here in Atlanta and asking anyone who was willing and able to record themselves adding whatever they felt called to add to it. Everyone on this track recorded themselves from their separate homes in Atlanta, playing along to the solo performance I had already laid down and really playing whatever they called to add to the song. I think this whole process was so collaborative and creative that it helped me get through those early weeks of uncertainty. I also wanted to help everyone out as much as possible, so all proceeds from the song are going back to these musicians. It’s a weird time right now and the future is very uncertain, but I think we all have to hold onto hope and lean on each other. This song is about hope, and I think it brings a little hope and joy to listen to all of my friends building this song into something beautiful.”

Burchfield’s 2020 first full-length album, ‘Graveyard Flower’, seeks to reconnect to these roots that raised him. In a world of cell phones and internet distractions, this body of work beckons the listener to plant their feet firmly in the soil. Reconnect to the land, reconnect to each other; ‘Graveyard Flower’ is honest music.
