I’ve Got a Fever is the new EP from Paul Simmonds featuring extra vocals from the wonderful Naomi Bedford along with, backing vocals from Noah, Luca and Xan Tyler. The EP recorded last month during lockdown by Noah Bramley. The limited-edition features unique hand-painted covers by Naomi, some of which I’ve seen on Facebook and they look great…own a bit of history…
The song begins with the Green Army marching to the green cathedral, from there you can pick out references that could easily apply to the current crisis before it ends with the events turning into a loop to start all over again – but not before landing on Thomas Paine the revolutionary and author of ‘Common Sense’…do we learn?

Lyrics from for the title track I’ve Got A Fever
Spring was rising like the sun on the hill
Green army marching to the green cathedral
Lambs were leaping and the crows laughed down
Seems like your time is coming around
I was sat in a room, the walls were thin
I couldn’t go out, I had to go in
Couldn’t trust my fingers, couldn’t trust my hands
There’s a strangler in the mist prowling through the lands
Last night I had a fever and there came a dream
Started as a song and ended as a scream
There’s a home invasion in the room downstairs
Cover your eyes, cover your ears
Cover your mouth, better stand still
If the germ don’t get you then the government will
There’s a virus in the air, it’s up with the drones
Now we’ve got to obey our telephones
Cowed like a herd by a shepherd and a dog
Walking on the cliff in the freezing fog
I was trying to escape, I was trying to leave
I’ve got a fever that you wouldn’t believe
Outside the sirens are calling from the rocks
There’s a boat on the radio can’t find the docks
Destined to drift like Marie Celeste
Wind from the east, waves from the west
One by one we walked to the chambers
Tied our own shackles just to help the jailers
Let’s form a circle and kill the strangers
I’ve got a fever that you wont believe
Now I’m standing by a man in a bed
Couldn’t move his arms, couldn’t move his legs
He said I think my time’s coming to an end
Up ahead he saw the road was turning to a bend
Looked to me said, ‘Can you get me out?’
‘You better stay where it’s safe’ I had no doubt
Later on they called me said ‘You better be quick
We’re loading up the morphine in the morphine stick’
Now there’s a tag on my wrist, a tag on my leg
They caught me with a net clamped around my head
They’re feeding me poison while I’m lying in bed
I’ve got a fever that you wont believe
Now I’m sat at a window watching the sun
I put my chances at five to one
If I’ve got to go well I’m not afraid
I played the mandolin in the great parade
I’m going to see God to plead my case
He’ll read my future in the lines on my face
I asked him why it had to be so hard
He said it could be easy if you lay down your cards
I said I cant do that I’ve got a running flush
He said I’ve got 4 aces and I’m in a rush
I said okay then let’s play chess
You be the east and I’ll be the west
It didn’t take long before the checkmate
I said What’s next? He said Exterminate
Now the sign on my bed says Don’t Resuscitate
I’ve got a fever you wont believe
There was only one way to get out of the room
It was up the chimney and into the gloom
So I piled up wood, poured out coal
Threw a lit match into the big black hole
Then I took off my clothes and stepped into the hearth
I knelt in the flames like a hot red bath
And soon I became just embers and smoke
And sparks that rose and dust that choked
At first I was asleep and then I awoke
Flying from the roof in the mist and the motes
Up through the clouds, out past the moon
Out past the crescent and Brigadoon
Like a splinter of glass restored to a pane
That had shattered into seven billion grains
Then down through the winds and the sun and the rain
I landed on a cool green temperate plain
I landed on a man and I saw his name
He was a customs runner named Thomas Paine
Spring was rising like the sun on the hill
Green army was marching to the cathedral
I’ve got a fever that you wont believe
I’ve got a fever that you wont believe
