Listening to ‘Continuous Portrait’, the latest single from Inventions, a vehicle for Matthew Robert Cooper (Eluvium) and Mark T. Smith (Explosions in the Sky) to further their creative curiosities certainly seems to live up to the statement that “Inventions has always been the product of two friends who find comfort and inspiration in the genuine surprise of creating and combining sounds.”
Continuous Portrait is the title track and third single to be shared from their forthcoming album. A listen to their 2015 Maze also seems to back up that this is an album that ventures quite far from their respective oeuvres.
There is something quite psychedelic and pastoral about the track which opens to samples of wood doves and bells. With it’s sampled sounds and distant vocals, it has a warm dream-like quality which is as enticing and engaging. It’s also our Song of the Day.
It’s the kind of music that you want to hear right now…as the accompanying press suggests: “Continuous Portrait whirls and hums like Cooper and Smith want us to invoke our inner playfulness and welcome a greater joy into our lives, if only for a moment.
“The result is a portrait that continuously embraces the completely foreign and familiar, and evolves with each successive listen.” I can’t disagree with that.
