The next Hudson Records Listening Club is this Sunday, 17th May at 10.30am and features The Furrow Collective – they will be listening to and talking about their album “Fathoms”.
The Furrow Collective, formed in 2013, were drawn together by a shared love of traditional song and balladry from England, Scotland and beyond. Their open and intuitive approach to collaboration was recognised in 2017 when they were awarded the accolade of ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. The Observer sums the band up pretty well “a winningly produced masterclass in the folk tradition.”
Third album, Fathoms was released in the autumn of 2018, produced by Andy Bell and recorded between Woodworm Studios (formerly owned by Fairport Convention) and Giant Wafer near Newtown. In ‘Fathoms’, Lucy Farrell (viola, voice & saw), Rachel Newton (harp, fiddle, voice), Emily Portman (banjo, concertina, voice) and Alasdair Roberts (guitars, voice) delve deeper in to the tradition through the unique sounds and harmonies only the Furrows produce.
“The Furrow Collective are right at the very top of the game when it comes to traditional music. No-one else is as innovative, and in a genre where innovation is sometimes seen as incompatible with the conservation of tradition, they prove that the opposite is true, that by treating folk music in an exciting new way we are helping to safeguard its future. And it is no exaggeration to say that if the future of folk music sounds like Fathoms we are in safe hands indeed.” Thomas Blake, Folk Radio (Read the full review here)
