I’m sure many of you will recall the last album released by husband and wife duo Mari and Tor Egil Kreken, better known as Darling West – ‘We’ll Never Know Unless We Try‘. In his album review, Danny Neill described the duo as solid and assured as they continue to embark on a cosmic journey that this record shows, is unfolding with a bold maturity. As well as calling it a super quality album he drew on many of the album’s strengths and virtues that set it apart, including the arrangements: “I cannot understate what a vital element the instrument arrangements play in making these tunes come alive.”
For the past few weeks now they have been delivering an intimate series of song covers every Friday. For their latest, they decided another love song was in order and, like their album, their choice of arrangements, even though it just two instruments, are just beautiful – so here’s their version of Bob Dylan’s song “If Not For You”.
The song featured on Dylan’s 1970 album ‘New Morning’ which was released soon after ‘Self Portrait’, an album that was considered something of a commercial failure. While that may be the case, songs like this one really made New Morning shine…it’s a great choice.
We’re so glad Mari decided to dust off that mandolin…the guitar/mandolin combo and those sweet harmonies really make this work so well.
