Bread and Roses is the latest single from Scottish singer-songwriter Kat Healy ~ a joyful collaboration with Scottish singer Karina Smillie.
It’s an uplifting, fresh take on the original version (lyric by poet, James Oppenheim) with a soaring vocal arrangement packed with swirling harmonies offering listeners a chance to enjoy a raw, strikingly honest interpretation of the song. Anthemic and joyously strident, the single was an ideal celebration of Women’s History Month (last month), an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. The accompanying video below carries on that theme still further.
Healey tells us “Inspired by Rose Schneiderman’s powerful speech from 1912, I wanted to collaborate with another spirited female singer (Karina Smillie) to create a fresh take on the original song.
“We were moved by essence of Schneiderman’s words, that everyone deserves dignity, respect and the opportunity to flourish in life. The line ‘hearts starve as well as bodies’ feels like the pinnacle of this track, highlighting the importance of having a sense of purpose and connection to thrive.
“We did our best to convey the joy we felt in this collaboration, it’s a candid example of women-supporting-women (in music), and we’re delighted to share it.”
A singer-songwriter from Edinburgh, Scotland, and a winner at the CalMac Music Awards 2016, Kat Healy’s material has been described as a combination of well-crafted songs, beautiful voice and delightful stage presence.
Bread and Rose is available on all digital platforms now and can be heard on Folk Radio’s ‘Regular Folk’ Playlist on Spotify.
