Sidewinder is the new single from Belgian singer songwriter Ian Clement and the first single taken from the forthcoming sophomore album See Me in Synchronicity, due for release in August 2020 via LA label Cobraside Records. See Me in Synchronicity is the follow up to Ian’s acclaimed debut album Drawing Daggers, released in 2013. Sidewinder is accompanied by an arresting, surrealist video made in collaboration between Ian and childhood friend and acclaimed photographer and visual artist Anton Coene. As Coene’s bio states about his work:
He tries to capture the moment as it is.
Not too much of color.
Not 5 photos of the same type.
But everything you need to create a mood, the mood that reflects the people or places he shutters.
He adheres to those principals throughout this video.
Whilst deeply personal, Ian’s deep, soulful voice and unique style of storytelling brings an accessible, universal quality to the narrative of Sidewinder. Musically a range of references are brought to mind, including the gothic imagery of Nick Cave, the raw honesty of Mark Lanegan and the simultaneously expansive and claustrophobic atmospherics of OK Computer era Radiohead.
Written and recorded long before the current international crisis relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, Sidewinder is a track that reflects on the concept of being cut off from ones loved ones and what one takes for granted as normality, it was inspired by Ian’s time convalescing following a breakdown, as he explains “the experience of isolation and loneliness is universal, whatever the specifics of a particular situation. Sidewinder was inspired by the isolation that came from spending extended time recovering in solitude”. For the Sidewinder video Ian and Anton Coene worked together to evoke some of the imagery and states of mind that consumed Ian during his time in hospital, when his connection to normality and the real world was severely undermined, this is reflected in the video by the protagonists’ journey from the mundane into the surreal.
See Me in Synchronicity was recorded at ICP Studios in Brussels with legendary German producer René Tinner, renowned for his work with artists such as CAN, Lou Reed, and George Harrison. Ian Clement rose to fame in Europe as front-man with heavy rock band Wallace Vanborn. The band topped charts and completed headline tours across the continent. Having taken a hiatus to prioritize returning to full health, Ian is now ready to bring his new record to audiences across the world.
Ian Clement’s Sidewinder single is released today (24 April) via Cobraside Records.
