My Girl The River are proud and pleased to announce their next single ‘I Try’ will be released Friday, April 10, digitally everywhere, in preparation for a full album launch on May 1.
The song is a very honest ‘love letter’, a confession if you will, of a woman asking for forgiveness and approval, apologising for her shortcomings and expressing her love to those around her. We aren’t perfect and this is at the core of ‘I Try’.
Kris’ mother, Judy, is a very big part of the album, its creation, its support and this track in particular. The song opens with ‘I try to be a good daughter and remember to call you. I get busy doing nothing and one day becomes two. You know I love you and you’re always on my mind. I try to be a good daughter, oh, mama, I try’.
Never have these words been more true with the sudden passing of Kris’ mother at the end of February. Prior to the virus lockdown (thank goodness!) Kris was able to see her mother in the US in hospital and be with her before she drifted off into her eternal sleep. The song has taken on a new meaning, going from the present tense to the past tense in the blink of an eye. Guilt and love are magnified when you experience such a tremendous loss. Kris has said ‘singing this song will be hard for months to come and sometimes I just ‘power through’ and other times I let the tears come. I’ll always dedicate this song to my sweet mom, my biggest fan. She was so excited about the album. I’m just so relieved we got her a copy of it in January. She loved it.’
I Try is the only ‘full band live’ track on the upcoming album Cardinal in the Snow. The artwork was adapted from the album cover by graphic artist and illustrator James Marsh (Talk Talk album art).
Produced by Neilson Hubbard (grammy nominated Mary Gauthier), recorded in East Nashville by Dylan Alldredge at Skinny Elephant Studios, this track features everyone who was in the room that day – Kris Wilkinson Hughes on vocals and acoustic guitar, Joe Hughes on double bass, Ruby Hughes on harmonies, Will Kimbrough on electric guitar, Juan Solorzano on steel and Neilson on drums.
