Last month, we shared the news of Toronto’s Luka Kuplowsky signing to Mama Bird Recording Co. This Friday sees the release of his EP Judee Justin Arthur Mary (24 April 2020), on which he celebrates the influences of Judee Sill, Justin Haynes, Arthur Russell and Mary Margaret O’Hara.
Today he has shared the third song from his EP of reimagined inspirations with Judee Sill’s ‘There’s a Rugged Road’, a soulful, stripped-back homage to the treasured songwriter and also our Song of the Day. The track opened her 1973 album Heart Food. Speaking of the Judee Sill cover, Kuplowsky says;
“The first time I played with Thom Gill and Josh Cole it was at the Holy Oak Cafe playing Judee Sill’s “There’s a Rugged Road”. Judee’s perfect song offered a musical space to converse with two artists who are now deeply inspirational collaborators. The song itself is incredibly visual and offers a rich harmonic path. We decided to tread softly and soulfully.”
And they did it so well…
