River Lea have just announced a new signing to the label. But as you can read below, he’s no stranger to the Dublin folk scene…
John Francis Flynn is a singer and multi-instrumentalist from Dublin whose work centres around traditional and folk material from Ireland and further afield.
He’s a founding member of the band Skipper’s Alley whose latest album ‘The Oul Fip” we reviewed here, and made a guest appearance on Ye Vagabond’s The Hare’s Lament album. John also appeared on Lankum’s Between The Earth And Sky record and was the opening act on their recent UK tour, as well as opening for Lisa O’Neill on her Irish tour. John Francis Flynn is currently recording his debut album for River Lea, the traditional music imprint of Rough Trade.
This live performance of John Francis Flynn singing the sea shanty Shallow Brown was filmed by Myles O’Reilly and is taken from season two, episode one of This Ain’t No Disco.
“When it comes to mining for the essence of a song, John Francis Flynn is in a league of his own. Physically and metaphysically, head and shoulders above the rest.” – Donal Dineen
