In 2010, a DVD was released featuring two of the leading lights of contemporary steel string guitar – Jack Rose and Glenn Jones. It was titled The Things That We Used to Do: Solos & Duets for Six- and 12-String Guitar, Lap Steel, and Banjo and it was in the final stages of production when Jack Rose died on December 5, 2009.
It’s described as a “mini-documentary and celebration of two artists, collaborators, and best of friends, whose art serves to illuminate the breadth of solo guitar, from its roots to where it is right now.”
It includes live performances shot especially for the project as well as an extensive interview by Byron Coley and bonus footage shot live in concert at Plays & Players in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in March 2009 from which the following clip is taken. Cross the North Fork us also our Tune of the Day.
It was directed by Jesse Sheppard who seems to work tirelessly at not only performing when he can in projects like Elkhorn but also in filming many of the artists we’ve grown to love over the years. It’s essential viewing for anyone who is interested in this incredible field of music.
The DVD can be purchased via Strange Attractors Audio House and I encourage you to buy it here:
