Last month, in his review of ‘The Romantic’, the latest offering from Taylor Ashton, David Morrison made no secret of his love for Ashton’s covers.
“Ashton has delivered sparkling cover versions from Solange to Cher, Randy Newman to Cyndi Lauper, should he ever decide it’s something he’d enjoy creating I’d welcome a covers album with open arms…”
That love for covers would have extended to the planned tour with Aoife O’Donovan, if things had progressed as normal, with each gig ending on ‘Loretta’, a Townes Van Zandt cover. For those that may feel robbed of never getting to hear them perform it together, the duo have released a single and an accompanying video (watch below). The accompanying notes reveal how that came about.
“After soundcheck on March 11th, the first night of tour, they worked up a rendition of the Townes Van Zandt tune “Loretta” as an idea to end the show each night. They never ended up playing that song live as that ended up being the only show of the tour. The following week, Taylor recorded his part in his apartment and sent it to Aoife, who added her part in her home. That recording has been mixed and mastered and is now released.”
