As announced here, Samantha Crain has is set to release her new album ‘A Small Death’ on May 1st via Real Kind Records, a newly launched label by singer Lucy Rose. Today marks the release of her new single ‘Garden Dove’ on which she says:
“Garden Dove is a new sort of song for me because I wrote it with my friends, Ben and Henry. I don’t write with other people often but when I heard the bones of this song that they had already been working on, I immediately knew I wanted to work on it. For me, this song is about putting in the work on yourself, not only for yourself, but for someone you love too. I know, in theory, that can be problematic, but I find the sentiment really sweet–the whole “you make me want to be a better person” thing. At the time (and continually), the person I wanted to better myself for was and is myself.”
She went on to explain the backstory to the video which you can watch below. “So with this idea in mind, this idea of being better for yourself and learning to love yourself, I started thinking about how much easier it was to connect with other people when you’re actually reveling in and enjoying your own company as well. It reminded me of a cult of friendship, sort of building this great web and community around myself.
“So, of course, I felt like I wanted to make a spooky Oklahoma backroads cult video for the song. I was inspired by Robert Weine and Hitchcock and the tiny clips I’ve seen of the B&W films that Mark Borchardt makes on “American Movie”. I directed the video and did the costumes, my friend, Blake, did the camerawork and the editing, and my friends Nia and Izze (who were also in my “An Echo” video) and Adam acted as my growing cult family.
“We filmed it on an extremely cold winter night on a dead end street in Norman, Oklahoma. I hope you all like the song and the video. It was such a fun track to produce and such a fun video to dream up and direct!”
Samantha has UK shows coming up, tickets for which will go on sale this Friday Feb 21st.
