Until they made contact, I’d not previously heard of the London based Alt-Folk trio (and sometimes more) The Greeners, but this unforgettable single is sure to change that for many. From the very opening of their new single ‘Old Street’, it’s clear that they are far from typical. From the deep resonance of Gus Seymour’s cello, the listener is cut adrift and then lifted by the exceptional vocals of Sonya Cullingford as they revisit home.
“This song was written about ‘Old Street’ in London, where James lives and where his daughters are growing up – James’ daughter Olwen appears in the official music video for the track. It’s about suddenly remembering a lost friend, but it’s also about remembering your childhood self, and what they might think of who you have become.
“It’s an ode to time gone by and time to come – a symphony of memory and longing, finding the joy in the poignant!
“The video came about when Justin McCarron (bassist) was approached by filmmaker Bindu de Stoppanni, who proposed that we collaborate on ‘Old Street’. They gathered a professional crew in Hastings and the surrounding area, including DOP Ben Cole, and organised a promotional gig at The Printworks (our film location) as a part of the shoot.
“Sonya, James and Gus are also performers in their own right, having worked with companies such as Punchdrunk and the RSC, and so the movement was choreographed by them (in collaboration with 11-year-old Olwen, of course!)”
Forget their influences; this trio is refreshingly original in every sense of the word.
