Burn Bridged is among the most upbeat tracks from Sound of Yell’s joyful and mercurial forthcoming new album, Leapling, which simultaneously hints at Moondog, Ennio Morricone and Tropicalia arranger Rogerio Duprat, while an unusually prominent trio of vocalists for Sound of Yell; Vikki Morton, Aby Vulliamy and Georgie White, recall post punk’s fascination with 60s girl groups. Composer Stevie Jones’ idiosyncratic fingerstyle steel-string underpins the song alongside Alex Neilson’s spritely and expansive drumming.
Sill Motion’s Brian Hartley shot his nuanced, exploratory film in Victoria Morton’s painting studio, incorporating one of her beguiling, vividly detailed and intensely colourful large scale canvases as a backdrop and ever-present layer throughout.
Stevie Jackson, though not present in the video, features on chromatic harmonica, weaving in and out of Vulliamy’s viola, White’s bass flute and Morton’s recorder and percussion. Also playing but not here seen is another of Jones’ long term collaborators, Alasdair Roberts on hurdy-gurdy.
Leapling will be released on Feb 28th on Chemikal Underground records. Sound of Yell will be touring in the U.K. throughout spring (dates below), beginning with a record launch at Glasgow’s C.C.A. on Feb 15th.
