For those of you that listened to our recent Lost in Transmission show, you would have heard a track by indie-folk singer-songwriter Alan Young who performs under the name of Serious Child. The track ‘Brambles’ was his first single to be taken from his forthcoming second album “Time in the Trees”, the result of a year he spent in the Sussex woods. As I said in the show notes, we’d have more on this release very soon. So, keeping that promise, today we have the pleasure of sharing the video for ‘The Oak’ his new single which is also available to stream through the likes of Spotify (where it’s also in our Mellow Folk Playlist).
The accompanying video for The Oak, which has a gorgeous vintage analogue feel, almost as if it was made on a hand-cranked 35mm movie camera, was shot at Petworth Park, West Sussex by Silvertip Films. Like the song, it is truly stunning.
Alan shares the following:
“I was about three-quarters of the way through writing and recording my album’ Time In The Trees’, when a scrap of paper fell out of a notebook I was leafing through. There were scribbled notes from a conversation with my friend Jamie Macrae where we wanted to write from the point of view of a tree. I realised that this note was before I had decided to spend a year writing about being in the trees, but had completely forgotten this starting point. It was like an archaeological artefact, showing what I’d wanted to do all along. The rest of the song, including the music, took about an hour; it just wrote itself.
“It also helped that I walked past a lonely old oak most days, wondering how it got there. When we came to make the video, we were lucky that it was a beautifully atmospheric morning in the mist, and that the National Trust had given us permission to film that old tree.”
Time in the Trees is out on the Spring Equinox on Friday, 20 March 2020 and will be available in digital, CD and Vinyl formats.
