Following the release of her 2017 album Foxglove and Fuschia, the former Danú frontwoman, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, is all set to make a return with Thar Toinn / Seaborne, what she describes as a ‘capsule project’. A mini-album of 6 tracks – each of them with reference to the sea or a sea-theme. “I’m obsessed with the ocean and our cultural connection to it. The name Muireann actually means Sea Maiden, there are three mermaids on the Mac Amhlaoibh coat of arms, and I’ve grown up on islands and the west coast of Kerry and get in the sea every chance I get. I’ve really enjoyed bringing my two passions together for this project.” The supporting cast is a veritable who’s who of traditional music amongst them; Gerry O’Beirne and Dónal O’Connor who will tour the album with Muireann, Niamh Varian-Barry,
Watch her new video for lead track Port na bPúcaí – The Fairy Tune from The Blasket Islands, Co. Kerry. A fisherman heard this music on the wind one night and played it on his fiddle. The words tell the story of a woman captured by the fairies.
Thar Toinn / Seaborne is released on 11th March 2020
